06.30STSADM command of the day!
STSADM.exe -o enumsites -url htt:// YOURSITENAMEHERE > SiteList.txt
Outputs a nice summary of sites and their sizes… write a script that can enum sites and you can get alot of nice, quick, and easy info!
For more complex reporting though… obviously the API is the way to go, more on that at another time (I got a couple good ones).
